When making ceramics, there are a lot of things that can go wrong. The clay can warp when its drying or being bisque fired. Drying the clay too quickly could cause a crack. If the glaze is applied too thinly. it appears too patchy, or applied too thickly, can run and drip. Particles of dust or other glaze can stick to a pieces whilst firing causing unwanted flecks. And then the kiln its self can under or over fire, causing a whole kilns worth of work to be ruined! So if you. have ever. worked with ceramic you will know - there are always ALOT of seconds.
